How to Import Magnets From China
The Way We Get Magnets From China Has Changed
Recent changes by the Chinese government have created a new export control process for magnets containing rare earth materials like neodymium and samarium cobalt. These changes are in place for the foreseeable future and affect how quickly magnets can be sourced from China.
To help you plan ahead and avoid disruptions, here’s what you need to know:
1. This isn’t about tariffs.
Tariffs affect cost. This new regulation affects availability. You now need a government-issued export license from China to receive magnets.
2. Expect at least 2-3 months of additional lead time.
The new licensing process can take 6 - 8 weeks or more per shipment. Even if magnets are in stock, we cannot receive them until a license is approved.
3. Think 12 months ahead at least.
A new export license must be approved for every order, even if you're buying the same magnets again. To reduce delays and paperwork, we recommend ordering in larger shipments rather than small or frequent orders.
4. Do you need magnets in the next 6 months?
Export licenses requires documentation from the end user — and that’s where we come in. We’ll walk you through exactly what’s needed, help you prepare the paperwork, and manage communication with the supplier in China to keep the process moving.
5. New documentation is required.
Each export license application must include detailed end-user documentation.
These are just examples of what may be required:
- A description of how the magnets will be used
- Product drawings or technical specs
- End-use assurance letter signed by the final user
- Corporate information (company name, address, contacts, and legal structure)
Requirements may vary depending on the magnet type and application. We’ll help make sure you’re prepared.
Bottom Line
The rules have changed. Magnets from China now require more time, paperwork, and planning. We’re here to help you navigate it. Let’s stay ahead of it together.
