Magnet Applications Supports the UK’s First Rare Earth Magnet Recycling Facility

Written by Bunting Magnetics | 01.27.26

Magnet Applications, a division of Bunting Magnetics, is proud to support the launch of HyProMag’s new rare earth magnet recycling and manufacturing facility at Tyseley Energy Park — the UK’s first commercial rare earth magnet production capability in more than 25 years.

The facility marks a major step forward for sustainable magnet manufacturing and supply chain resilience. Using Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap (HPMS) technology, HyProMag can recover and remanufacture high-performance rare earth magnets from end-of-life materials, reducing reliance on primary mining while strengthening domestic access to critical magnetic materials.

For the UK and Europe, this is more than a technical milestone. It’s the return of commercial rare earth magnet manufacturing — and a meaningful move toward a more secure, circular supply chain.

From Research to Commercial Production

Developed by the Magnetic Materials Group at the University of Birmingham through the SUSMAGPRO program, HPMS technology enables rare earth magnet scrap to be recycled into new, high-performance magnetic materials at scale.

At Tyseley, the process can recover more than 400 kg of alloy per batch and produce approximately 100 tons of sintered magnets annually on a single shift — with capacity exceeding 300 tons under multi-shift operation.

This establishes Tyseley as the UK’s only commercial-scale rare earth sintered magnet manufacturing facility and a critical enabler of electrification, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Magnet Applications’ Role in Enabling Production

Magnet Applications has supported HyProMag’s development from the earliest stages, helping bridge the gap between laboratory research and real-world industrial production.

As a long-time partner in SUSMAGPRO and a specialist in magnetizing systems, the company has contributed both equipment and practical engineering expertise to ensure the process operates reliably at commercial scale.

Support at Tyseley includes:

  • Powder-alignment magnetizing systems for precise magnetic orientation prior to pressing and sintering
  • Finished-magnet magnetizing equipment for on-site processing of completed blocks
  • Fixture development and process optimisation
  • Integration support for a fully operational manufacturing line

Together, these capabilities help establish a complete UK-based value chain—from recycling and powder production through to finished magnets.

With decades of magnetization experience across industrial, scientific, and high-volume environments, Magnet Applications helps ensure recycled magnets perform as reliably and consistently as newly manufactured materials.

In recognition of these contributions, Matthew Swallow, Global Head of Sales, represented Magnet Applications on the Minister’s private tour during the official opening of the Tyseley facility.

A Strategic Advantage in Critical Materials

The timing of the Tyseley facility is especially significant.

Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREEs) such as Dysprosium (Dy) and Terbium (Tb) remain among the most geopolitically constrained materials in the global magnet supply chain. Export restrictions, price volatility, and concentration of primary supply continue to challenge manufacturers across Europe and North America.

Recycled magnet material offers a practical alternative by providing:

  • Reliable domestic access to critical HREEs
  • Lower carbon footprint compared with mining and refining
  • Improved price stability
  • Faster qualification and deployment for industrial use

HPMS delivers these advantages at commercial scale, strengthening Western supply chains while reducing environmental impact.

Scaling Beyond the UK

Tyseley represents the first step in a broader international rollout.

HyProMag is already advancing expansion plans in Germany and the United States. A recent feasibility study for a Texas operation projects a post-tax Net Present Value of $409 million, underscoring the strong commercial case for large-scale magnet recycling.

Magnet Applications’ magnetizing equipment portfolio and global experience position the company to support these future facilities, extending circular magnet manufacturing beyond the UK.

Building a Circular Magnet Economy

The opening of HyProMag’s Tyseley facility demonstrates what’s possible when academia, government, and industry work together to solve real supply chain challenges.

With HyProMag’s recycling technology and Magnet Applications’ magnetization expertise, the UK is re-establishing itself as a leader in sustainable magnet manufacturing.

This facility is more than a production site.
It’s the foundation of a new era in circular magnetics — and Magnet Applications is proud to help build what comes next.
